1/5 Recoining Equine Vocabulary: Change Leadership to Companionship

Leadership is often emphasised in traditional horse training as something the human must maintain to keep the horse "in line." Yet, when we look at a horse’s natural abilities—strength, agility, speed, and sensory acuity—it becomes clear that horses are more physically capable than we are. Trying to "lead" them in the human sense can feel unnatural, if not contradictory.

Instead of prioritising leadership, we might focus on “companionship.” Companionship acknowledges our differences and works with them rather than trying to override them. In companionship, the horse isn’t expected to behave as a subordinate. Rather, they’re a partner, valued for their unique abilities and insights, and approached with respect, integrity and understanding.
